Backstory:
Otobe was born in the Maasai agricomplex in Hellas Crater. The Hellas AgriDomes were his first
home, and he tended livestock much as his African ancestors, but with greater technological
assistance. The tall and charismatic Otobe soon found he had a desire to see the world, and he
succeeded in gaining admission to the University of Luna on Earth’s moon. There, he distinguished
himself in the study of history and literature, especially that of the Earthsiege period and the rise of
the Empire. He travelled extensively on Earth and to the Orbital Platforms. Eventually, though, he
became homesick for Mars, and returned to take a post in the colonial government. He married
his old sweetheart from his Hellas days and began to have children.
When the Empire began to enforce the Fortification Proclamation and restructure the Martian
economy to feed the Imperial military buildup, Otobe spoke up in protest. When the violence
started, he was arrested and jailed with other "troublemakers." He was quickly freed by a rebel
team, and he went into hiding, sending his family to live with relatives in the highlands of Syria,
south of Valles Marineris. Soon after, he offered his services to the rebels and learned to pilot a
Herc. Several of his cousins followed him, and the Otobe name is well known among rebel
sympathizers.
